Marcellus

Marcellus
(d. c. 374)
   Bishop and Theologian.
Marcellus was Bishop of Ancyra in Anatolia. He was the author of a treatise directed against the teachings of Asterius, eusebius of nicomedia and eusebius of caesarea. He was a determined supporter of the ‘homoousion’ (of the same substance) formula of the Council of Nicaea, but he seems to have thought that the persons of the Trinity only became independent for the duration of the incarnation. In consequence he was deposed from his See in 336, restored temporarily and then deposed again. To combat his position, the clause ‘Whose Kingdom shall have no end’ was put into the Nicene Creed. A letter he wrote to Pope Julius I also survives. It contains the oldest Greek text of the Old Roman Creed, an earlier version of the Apostles’ Creed.
